President’s Welcome - Chris Tanner

On behalf of our Board of Directors and Steering Committee, I welcome you to the NSSBE website. The National Society of Steel Band Educators is a new professional organization dedicated to advancing steel band education in the United States. We aim to be a central resource for those who direct or lead steel bands in the U.S., and to foster a sense of community among practitioners of this wonderful art form.

We envision NSSBE as a member-driven organization, and so you'll notice that some content on the site is accessible to members only. We hope that you will support NSSBE, and indeed the steel band art form in the U.S. as a whole, through your membership.

While we intend for the website to be the primary vehicle for sharing best practices, pedagogies and news, we also realize that gathering together provides unique opportunities for engagement. Therefore we invite you to join us at our inaugural conference on March 10, 2018 in Oxford, OH on the campus of Miami University. You’ll be a part of history by attending this initial conference — don’t miss it! Further details can be found here.

Finally, NSSBE is a nascent organization, and as such we welcome your feedback. Contact us with your ideas. What do you want to see on our website? What sessions might be interesting or helpful on a conference program? How can we best serve you and meet your needs as either a veteran or an aspiring steel band educator? We look forward to hearing from you.

Chris Tanner, President

NSSBE leadership at PASIC 2017

The NSSBE Board of Directors — Chris Tanner, Brandon Haskett and Tom Miller — participated in this year’s Mass Steel Band session at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention on Saturday, November 11th in Indianapolis. Steering Committee members Yuko Asada, Emily Lemmerman, and Eugene Novotney also played in the mass band. Miller, Lemmerman and fellow Steering Committee member Matt Dudack had pieces featured on the program. The repertoire for the concert was selected through a competitive process.
Newly minted PAS Hall of Fame member Andy Narell joined the band in impromptu fashion, playing an improvised solo on John Wooten’s arrangement of “Midday Oasis.”
Many of the participants in the mass band were educators from across the country. View the program here: PASIC Program. Thanks to Rick Kurasz, professor at Western Illinois University, for organizing this session.
