President’s Welcome - Chris Tanner

On behalf of our Board of Directors and Steering Committee, I welcome you to the NSSBE website. The National Society of Steel Band Educators is a new professional organization dedicated to advancing steel band education in the United States. We aim to be a central resource for those who direct or lead steel bands in the U.S., and to foster a sense of community among practitioners of this wonderful art form.

We envision NSSBE as a member-driven organization, and so you'll notice that some content on the site is accessible to members only. We hope that you will support NSSBE, and indeed the steel band art form in the U.S. as a whole, through your membership.

While we intend for the website to be the primary vehicle for sharing best practices, pedagogies and news, we also realize that gathering together provides unique opportunities for engagement. Therefore we invite you to join us at our professional conference on March 13-14, 2020 in Cincinnati, OH at Walnut Hills High School. Finally, NSSBE is a nascent organization, and as such we welcome your feedback. Contact us with your ideas. What do you want to see on our website? What sessions might be interesting or helpful on a conference program? How can we best serve you and meet your needs as either a veteran or an aspiring steel band educator? We look forward to hearing from you.

Chris Tanner, President

NSSBE Annual Conference

NSSBE is excited to announce that the Britain Moore Duo (BMD) will headline our 2020 conference on March 13th and 14th at Walnut Hill High School in Cincinnati, Ohio! The duo consists of Mat Britain (Vanderbilt University) and Dan Moore (University of Iowa), who met at Wichita State University while studying percussion under J.C. Combs. Founded in 1986, the BMD combines keyboard percussion and steelpan and performs a wide variety of musical styles.
The duo has three albums, Nutville (2014), Little World of Rhythm (2001), and Cricket City (1993), and has performed hundreds of times throughout the world. The BMD has collaborated with numerous other artists as well including Matt Wilson, Roy “Futureman” Wooten, and NEXUS. For more information on the BMD, please visit
