President’s Welcome - Chris Tanner

On behalf of our Board of Directors and Steering Committee, I welcome you to the NSSBE website. The National Society of Steel Band Educators is a professional organization dedicated to advancing steel band education in the United States. We aim to be a central resource for those who direct or lead steel bands in the U.S., and to foster a sense of community among practitioners of this wonderful art form.

We have compiled a host of resources that we feel are beneficial to the community, as well as a number of pedagogical articles on various topics. Additionally, we are launching soon a series of YouTube videos featuring experts in the field. All of these resources are free and open to the public in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are committed to providing these resources to all, members and non-members alike during these difficult times. If you are not currently a member of NSSBE, we hope you will consider supporting our community through your membership, when the time is right for you.

While we intend for the website to be the primary vehicle for sharing best practices, pedagogies and news, we also realize that gathering together provides unique opportunities for engagement. Therefore we invite you to join us at our professional conference on February 26-27, 2021 in Summerville, SC. Watch this space for further details to be announced over the summer months.

Finally, NSSBE is a young organization, and as we look forward to growing in the years to come, we welcome your feedback. Contact us with your ideas. What do you want to see on our website? What sessions might be interesting or helpful on a conference program? How can we best serve you and meet your needs as either a veteran or an aspiring steel band educator? We look forward to hearing from you.

Chris Tanner, President

NSSBE Annual Conference

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NSSBE had to cancel its 2020 annual Professional Conference, which was scheduled for March 13-14 in Cincinnati, OH. As disappointing as this decision was, it was the correct decision. The safety and health of our membership, and the Cincinnati area at large, was our primary concern.
Plans for our 2021 Professional Conference are already underway. The NSSBE 2021 conference will be held on February 26-27, 2021 in Summerville, SC, with Steering Committee member Mike Greer hosting. We are very pleased to announce that our headliners for 2020, the Britain Moore Duo, are scheduled to be with us in 2021. The duo consists of Mat Britain (Vanderbilt University) and Dan Moore (University of Iowa), who met at Wichita State University while studying percussion under J.C. Combs. Founded in 1986, the BMD combines keyboard percussion and steelpan and performs a wide variety of musical styles.
The duo has three albums, Nutville (2014), Little World of Rhythm (2001), and Cricket City (1993), and has performed hundreds of times throughout the world. The BMD has collaborated with numerous other artists as well including Matt Wilson, Roy “Futureman” Wooten, and NEXUS. For more information on the BMD, please visit
