It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the 2024 meeting of the National Society of Steel Band Educators Conference on the campus of McCallum High School in Austin, Texas. This is not a conference you want to miss!

It is easy get to Austin, TX from pretty much anywhere in the country. The closest airport to use for this conference is the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), Presidential Boulevard, Austin, TX.

It is a 16-minute drive from the airport to the hotel.  There are shuttle services, taxis (reserved ahead of time), and various other transportation options available.

8:35AM Welcome / Intro 

8:45AM Gerion Williams — Engine Room Workshop- Basics and Current Trends (hands on)

This interactive session will give workshop participants hands on experience playing authentic engine room parts that effectively support and integrate with current steel band performance trends. Participants will learn essential drum set, conga, iron, bell, timbale, and scratcher rhythms from one of the world’s top soca and steel band drummers. Steel band directors will given valuable tools to help strengthen their engine room sections of any skill level.

 

10:00AM Larkspur Percussion Duo – – – Solo and Chamber Repertoire for Steelpan

Larkspur Percussion Duo (Lauren Molloy and Louis Raymond-Kolker) will perform solo and duo transcriptions and compositions for tenor and double second pans, and discuss the benefits of studying solo and chamber literature, especially at the high school and university levels. The commissioning process for creating new works will also be addressed.

 

11:15AM CJ Menge – – – Steelband Rehearsal Techniques: From Zero to Performance (hands-on)

Designed for both student participants and steel band directors, players will learn a new, original soca composed by CJ Menge specifically for the NSSBE conference and perform the piece by the end of the session. Steel band directors will be given the complete score and parts to the composition, which they can take back to their programs if desired. Topics to be addressed include: Rehearsal strategies, Time management, Touch and tone, Level specific rhythmic considerations, Ensemble Awareness-dynamic contrast

2:15PM Gary Gibson – – – Padding the Program: Maximizing Arrangements with Economic Variation-

This workshop is a survey of economic arranging methods, in particular variations over a basic melodic form, that can stretch your tunes without costing loads of time in rehearsal. The goal is a compact, concert-length arrangement that stays interesting to the end.

 

3:15PM Mike Mizma & San Jacinto College Central Steel Band (open to the public)

4:15PM Dinner / Final Vendor Time

7:30PM Gary Gibson & Friends (open to the public)

8:15PM Social / Hang

The steel bands from Inside Out and San Jacinto Community College will be featured performers at this year’s conference.

Registration Info: Registration to the conference includes a light breakfast, including coffee, on Saturday morning. Lunch and dinner on both evenings will be on your own.

Professional $125 (must be a current NSSBE member)

Vendor – $100  (plus professional registration)- includes up to two tables (3×6) ***Vendor portion invoiced separately after contacting Brandon Haskett at blhaskett@gmail.com.

Student: $25 registration (must be a current NSSBE member)    

NEW THIS YEAR: GROUP REGISTRATION 

If you would like to bring your elementary, middle, or high school group to the NSSBE conference, we have new group rates. Please e-mail blhaskett@gmail.com if you are interested in this option (do not use the form below) and you will be sent a PayPal invoice for your group. Group registrants do not need to be NSSBE members to attend.

The rates below do NOT include the director’s registration, which should be completed as an individual registration (see form below).

  • 5-8 students attending is $100
  • 9-12 students attending is $200
  • 13 students or above attending is $300
